The DRD track is a collaborative, interdisciplinary program that encourages study across departments, research areas, and themes. Also housed in the College of Arts and Sciences is the Department of Design, which has a fully-funded, three-year MFA program with tracks in Digital Animation and Interactive Media (DAIM); Design Research and Development (DRD); and Art and Technology. The DAIM track requires 12 studio elective credits and six credits of interdisciplinary electives, allowing for plenty of opportunities to focus in games. Students in all Champlain Game Studio majors will develop a number of games that can be presented to recruiters from major studios such as Gameloft, Activision, and Warner Bros.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSACS). Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) is a designated New York State Center of Excellence (NYSTAR) in Digital Game Development. Programs for game designers are housed in the Games and Simulation Arts and Sciences (GSAS) Department, which is part of RPI’s School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS). Pathways to study game design include the GSAS BS, the Critical Game Design MS, and the Critical Game Design Co-Terminal MS Program.
Life after the Game Center
The School of Arts and Sciences at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) is home to the Interactive Media & Game Development (IMGD) Program. IMGD houses several degree pathways including the BA, BS, MFA, MS, and BS/MS in IMGD. The dual IMGD BS/MS allows students to complete both degrees at an accelerated pace. Students can complete the program in four to five years instead of six or more. The CGT MS at Purdue Polytechnic has four specialization areas including Games, Animation, Information Visualization, and UX Design.
What to Look for in a Game Design School
Each quarter, students have the opportunity to interview and present their portfolios to professionals in the industry. Past visitors have been affiliated with studios such as Electronic Arts (EA), Zynga, and Activision Blizzard. Graduates of the IDGD Programs at Savannah College of Art and Design are routinely hired by these and other studios such as Epic Games, Firaxis Games, and Sucker Punch Productions. Housed in the College of Art and Design is the School of Design, which has an additional option for students interested in studying games.
MICA designers have been hired for paid positions or internships by Abercrombie & Fitch, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Google, Kate Spade, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Museum of Modern Art, National Public Radio, Under Armour, and many others. Founded in 1809, Miami University houses the oldest college newspaper west of the Alleghenies. Established in 1861, the University of Washington (UW) serves more than 54,000 students annually across three campuses in Seattle, Tacoma, and Bothell. The school’s 18 colleges and schools offer more than 570 degree options across 300+ programs, with more than 1,800 undergraduate courses alone each quarter. The Mobile Gaming MS consists of graduate level mobile gaming research, emerging technologies, and the application of theoretical concepts to game design and development.
Within COTA is the Digital Worlds Institute, which houses the Digital Arts & Sciences (DAS) program. As part of UF, the DAS program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). CGT BS graduates are prepared to pursue roles such as Game Design Scripter, Animator, Technical Artist, and Cinematic Lead. Potential employers include Electronic Arts (EA), Riot Games, Zynga, and Volition.
University of Florida
Students will graduate from the MSU Games and Interactive Media program with a professional portfolio of both large and small projects that reflect a wide range of works. Program alumni are prepared to pursue careers such as Game Designer, 2D Artist, Interaction Designer, Game Scenario Writer, Producer, Technical Designer, Usability Engineer, Programmer, UI/UX Designer, Technical Artist, Level Designer, Quality Assurance, and Project Manager. This two-week trip to Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nagoya consists of visits to game and animation companies; galleries and museums; restaurants; and temples, cultural centers, and historic sites.
University of California Los Angeles
University of Washington (UW) offers a Certificate in Game Design in the College of Professional & Continuing Education (PCE). Designed for artists with at least two years of college experience who are interested in launching a career in game design or working designers and developers seeking advancement opportunities in the games industry. This three-quarter intensive program covers game design, game mechanics and systems design, and game studio roles and development. The MIT Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences (BCS) offers an additional program for designers looking to specialize in unique areas such as psychological games and behavioral change. The BS in Brain & Cognitive Science is offered in partnership with the EECS Department.
Undergraduates are offered a BS in Computational Media with a Game Studies Focus while students can earn an MS in Digital Media. Additionally, UCSC’s program currently has five game-related research labs being used by future developers. All students are required to complete a year-long capstone project that has them working in teams to create a complete product. Of course, MIT also has a wonderful Electrical Engineering And Computer Science course, which is perfect for those who want more skill with programming games as opposed to designing the artwork for them. It’s a pity that MIT does not yet offer a full course on game design itself, but having a degree from MIT will open plenty of doors for your career. As an example, their “Comparative Media Studies” course is great for students who are interested in the history of video games as a medium.
Students in both minor programs have access to the same facilities, labs, and resources provided through the GMU CVPA. During the last two terms of the Entertainment Design BS students will complete an individual game project, an advanced game project, the Portfolio and Career Preparation course, and Grad Show Preparation. Students in all RPI GSAS programs have access to everything the RPI Center of Excellence in Digital Game Development has to offer. Options include a BS in GSAS; an MS Critical Game Design; and a PhD in Critical Game Design. Across all programs, students have access to the Drexel Game Design and the RePlay Lab; the Entrepreneurial Game Studio (EGS); and the Center for Games, Artificial Intelligence, and Media Systems (GAIMS Center).

For both the BCS BS and the Business BS, students have the opportunity to work with the MIT Game Lab to customize a focus area that aligns with their goals. The Electrical Engineering & Computer Science Department (EECS) is part of the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing.
